Prime Minister Jüri Ratas met with the council of the Estonian Employers’ Confederation to discuss the greatest challenges that the Estonian economy faces. The inclusion of foreign labour as well as cooperation with the Economic Development Committee of the government were discussed at the meeting.

“The labour market is one of the main bottlenecks of economic development, which means that the principles of including foreign labour as well as domestic labour reserves should be reviewed. Foreign labour should be included in a way that would help to decrease the bottlenecks of the labour market and diversify our human capital,” Ratas said. The prime minister added that the increase in the proportion of foreign workers promotes innovation and increases the GDP.

The parties to the meeting found that closer cooperation between the Estonian Employers’ Confederation and the Economic Development Committee of the government is very welcome and the first joint session will take place soon. According to the prime minister, the increased inclusion of employers in the work of the committee will help to better focus on issues that increase productivity and support sustainable economic growth.

“The wise decisions of entrepreneurs as well as their willingness to take risks and contribute to the well-being of their employees and the whole society are the primary guarantees for fast economic growth. The role of the government is to support them in this,” Jüri Ratas emphasised. He also pointed out that in Finland representatives of both employers and employees regularly participate in the work of a similar committee.

The prime minister and the representatives of the council of the Estonian Employers’ Confederation also discussed international cooperation and Estonia’s activity in introducing itself as a digital society and including foreign investors. Additionally, Estonian opportunities to actively participate in discussions regarding the future of Europe and the world were talked about.
